This site was the first generation website for KYMC Radio before the YMCA took over site maintenance and hosting. Sadly, recent months have brought the closing of KYMC. The YMCA of Greater St. Louis has decided that it cannot afford the investment required to sustain the station. It is truly a tragedy. KYMC was a place where anyone could take to the airwaves and share their taste in music and talk with the community. It provided a great opportunity for kids and people from all walks of life who would never be able to have the opportunity to do their own radio show somewhere else. The Y marketed the station as existing for education for the community; and it did exactly that by providing a unique education for many and creating a community of broadcasters and listeners. Unfortunately this is a loss for that community. However, it is a bigger loss for the YMCA of Greater St. Louis as the West County YMCA was the ONLY YMCA in the nation to operate its own station. Coupled with the Chesterfield Community Theater, the West County Y was defiantly one of the most unique Y’s in the country. The Y also lost some great people: the station manager, music director, the participants, and the support staff; all these people worked beyond their job descriptions and volunteered their own time to keep the station going. This is big loss for the Y. What makes it more shocking is that the Y had just invested in new automation hardware and was in the process of configuring it; also the station was lined up to start online streaming in the beginning of 2007.
